A Celebration of City and Suburban First Avenue Estate

In October 2019, the City and Suburban First Avenue Estate was saved from demolition, thanks to a years-long, hard-fought battle waged by the LPC, our elected officials, and concerned preservation organizations like FRIENDS. And this victory should be celebrated!

The First Avenue Estate, built 1915, stands out as one of the first privately-financed attempts to improve workers’ housing in New York City, and is a unique example of early progressive housing reform on the Upper East Side. Catering to a large immigrant tenant community, The First Avenue Estate offered nearly-unheard-of luxuries like light and air, which marked a vast improvement over traditional tenements, and helped Yorkville’s diverse communities thrive. 

Join us for a multi-part celebration and conversation via Zoom honoring First Avenue Estates. Over the course of the week, Andrew Dolkart, Will Cook, and Anthony C. Wood will join preservationist Lisa Ackerman for a series of special discussions regarding the cultural significance, architectural history, community advocacy, and legal significance of the complex, and the battle to protect it.

Lisa Ackerman Executive Director - Columbus Citizens Foundation

Lisa Ackerman currently serves as Executive Director of Columbus Citizens Foundation, an organization devoted to Italian American heritage. Lisa Ackerman previously served as Interim CEO of World Monuments Fund in 2018 and 2019, where she served from 2007 to 2018 as Executive Vice President, developing international collaborative projects in heritage conservation. During that time, she oversaw approximately 100 projects in 60 countries.


Andrew Dolkart Professor of Historic Preservation - Columbia University

Professor Andrew S. Dolkart is a graduate of Colgate University and Columbia’s Historic Preservation Program. He has been active in historic preservation in New York City for over thirty years, as a staff member at the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as a freelance consultant, and as a teacher. He has worked extensively with neighborhood groups on preservation efforts and has completed scores of National Register nominations, Landmark Commission designation reports, historic resource surveys for environmental reviews, and urban cultural resource inventories. Andrew has also written extensively about his passion, the architecture and development of New York City, focusing in particular on the city’s everyday, vernacular building types and how they influenced the character of neighborhoods.


Will Cook Special Counsel - Cultural Heritage Partners

Will Cook is a nationally recognized lawyer and scholar with a successful record for protecting National Historic Landmarks, significant landscapes, historic viewsheds, and traditional cultural properties. His practice focuses on balancing historic preservation with economic development so that historic preservation law is more efficient, effective, and predictable. Will earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law, and is a graduate of Furman University, where he received a B.A. in political science. Prior to joining Cultural Heritage Partners, Will served for eight years as associate general counsel for the National Trust for Historic Preservation and teaches preservation law at Columbia University.


Anthony C. Wood Executive Director - Ittleson Foundation

Anthony C. Wood is a preservationist, author, teacher, historian, and grant maker. Currently the Executive Director of the Ittleson Foundation, he has worked for the J. M. Kaplan Fund, the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, and the Municipal Art Society. For over 20 years, he was a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Historic Preservation Program at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation. He is the author of Preserving New York: Winning the Right to Protect a City’s Landmarks.
