From Gilded-Age Opulence to Contemporary Ukrainian Art: A Behind-the-Scenes tour of the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion

Join FRIENDS of the Upper East Side Historic Districts and the Ukrainian Institute of America for a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion at 2 East 79th Street. The building is one of the last intact Gilded-Age Mansions on Fifth Avenue, and has served as the Institute’s headquarters since 1955. The stunning French-Gothic chateau, designed by C.P.H. Gilbert in 1898, has several cousins along Fifth Avenue. Gilbert also designed the mansions that became the Jewish Museum and the Cartier Building, but no place in New York combines art, culture, scandal, knickerbocker heritage quite like Fletcher-Sinclair. In this tour with the building’s caretaker, you’ll get a close look at the mansion’s landmarked architectural flourishes, and hear about the home’s association with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, its role in the Teapot Dome Scandal of 1922, its relationship to the last direct descendants of Peter Stuyvesant, and its current life as the premier home for Ukrainian arts and culture in New York City!
